Minister lauds SBL’s 470m/- wastewater management investment

A 470m/- wastewater management pipeline investment has earned Serengeti Breweries Limited a slot in the government’s environment ministry clean book.
Deputy Minister in the Vice President’s Office responsible for the Environment, Luhanga Mpina said yesterday in Dar es Salaam that SBL’s investment conforms to regulatory guidelines pertaining to environmental conservation.
Mpina said after launching the SBL wastewater management plant which includes a pipeline, that the company has shown commitment to provide the highest hygienic standards to its factory environment and neighbouring residents.
Mpina pointed out that environmental pollution in both urban and rural areas affects the health of many people hence lowering productivity of both humans and the environment.
“I call upon other manufacturers to emulate SBL’s good example in environmental preservation. We are commending the good efforts that Serengeti Breweries has done to preserve the environment,” the Deputy Minister noted.
On her part, SBL Managing Director, Helene Weesie said plant and pipeline were installed under the supervision of Dar es Salaam Water and Sawege Company (DAWASCO), Tanzania Roads Agency (TanRoads) and Temeke Municipal Council and covers about 2kms its brewing plant at Chang’ombe to Kurasini where it connects into DAWASCO’s wastewater drainage system.
“Water quality is at the forefront of brewing but the sanitation of the wastewater effluent is an enormous part of the environmentally conscious brewing business. The inauguration of this pipeline will therefore go a long way in ensuring a clean and hygienic environment,” she said.
She added: “The wastewater delivered by the pipeline was pre-treated thus removing harmful pollutants before being finally discharged to DAWASCO’s waste treatment system”.
The SBL Boss pointed out that the inauguration of the project is in line with SBL’s policy commitment towards the wellbeing of the community that was defined by its four priority areas that included Provision of Skills for Life, Environmental Sustainability and Promotion of Responsible Drinking.
Since the creation of SBL in 2002, the business has grown its portfolio of brands year on year. The majority stake acquisition by EABL/Diageo in 2010 has seen increased investment in brands.
SBL Brands include: Serengeti Premium Lager, Pilsner, Tusker Lager, Tusker Lite, Kibo Gold, Guinness stout, Uhuru and Kick.
SBL is also home to world’s renowned spirits such as Johnnie Walker Whisky, Smirnoff Vodka, Gordon’s Gin, Captain Morgan Rum and Bailey’s Irish Cream.
